THE FIRE TOWER

Junior Year 2015

An old fire tower located in downtown Baton Rouge, LA is to be converted into a short term living and studio space for visiting artists and possibly a partner and child. The space will be compact yet comfortable.  It will contain multiple spaces with transformable furniture. Each floor will have a separate set of functions and privacy levels.  The studio will have the most light and the most space.  It will be comfortable and adaptable to a variety of art forms. The architectural intervention is parasite because there are components added to the building that depend on it like the stairs and elevator, and the original building depends on them.  To design the parasitic component, I worked with the pattern the stairs and floors made in profile view and incorporated the pattern throughout the parasitic component.

MODEL

The model is made from hand cut pieces of chipboard and white mat board glued together with super glue.  It demonstrates the spatial elements and natural light distribution.
